Janae Hughes: The Road To A Meaningful Career

Janae Hughes: The Road to a Meaningful Career

Sometimes, a career starts in an unexpected way.

For Bancroft Direct Support Professional (DSP) Janae Hughes, her career at Bancroft started on the road. While driving behind a Bancroft work van, Janae noticed a simple message: Bancroft was hiring. She decided to give it a shot.

At the time, she didn’t know much about Bancroft or what it meant to be a DSP. Today, she’s found work that means something to her and a career she wants to build.

“I’ve really enjoyed supporting individuals, helping them build independence, and making a positive difference in their daily lives,” Janae shared.

Support, Independence, and Advocacy

For Janae, one of the rewards of being a Direct Support Professional is seeing an individual reach a goal, learn a new skill or take a step toward greater independence.

The role has also taught Janae the importance of looking at each person as an individual, with their own strengths, preferences and goals. Person-centered support means listening, respecting choices, helping each person have as much independence as possible, and advocating for them

“Being their voice when needed and ensuring they are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion has been one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in this role,” she says.

Growing together

One of Janae’s most meaningful experiences as a DSP has also been a reminder that growth happens on both sides of the relationship.

Early in her career, she was nervous about supporting an individual whose challenging behaviors made it difficult for him to participate in community outings. Over time, Janae worked to build his trust while developing the skills and confidence needed to provide him with effective support.

Today, he is one of her favorite people to work with, and with her support, he is able to participate in many of the community outings he once missed. “Seeing how much he enjoys those experiences and knowing that my growth has helped make them possible is incredibly rewarding,” Janae said.

“Knowing that my work helps individuals reach their goals, experience new opportunities, and have a better quality of life is what continues to inspire me and reminds me why this work is so meaningful.”

“Being recognized at that point in my journey showed me that the effort I put into supporting individuals, growing in my role, and making a positive impact truly mattered. Those moments motivate me to continue learning, improving, and giving my best every day.”

A team that feels like family

While the individuals she supports are at the heart of her work, the people Janae works alongside have also played an important role in her career.

She describes her team as a family, where colleagues support one another and treat each other with respect and care. That sense of community helps keep Janae motivated, even on difficult days.

Receiving a Maggie Award just two years into her DSP career remains one of Janae’s proudest moments.

Every day makes a difference

That hiring message on the back of a work van led Janae to a career built around supporting others, continuing to learn and being part of a team that cares.

Every morning, she comes to work ready to give her best to the individuals she supports.

“I truly love what I do,” Janae says. “As long as I am a DSP and RBT, I will continue to be an advocate and provide person-centered support.”
