A Calling To Help Others: One Social Worker's Journey At Bancroft
For Misty Simmons, the path to her career as a Social Worker began with a simple truth—she’s always wanted to help others. Social work offered her the opportunity to make a direct and meaningful impact on people’s lives.
A Full-Circle Connection to Bancroft
Her first experience with Bancroft came in childhood, when she participated in a Bancroft Walk for Autism. Years later, after earning her degree in psychology, she joined the Lindens as a direct care staff member. Inspired by the individuals and staff around her, she pursued her Master of Social Work with support from Bancroft’s tuition reimbursement program. When she graduated, a social work position opened at the Bancroft School, and was a perfect fit for her passion for helping others.
Making a Difference Every Day
Now the Director of Social Work, Misty provides support to both students and their families—helping them navigate systems, secure services, and find resources. She also mentors a team of social workers who make a direct impact in the lives of students and families.
Social workers at Bancroft play diverse roles—as therapists, case managers, or both—and act as liaisons between families, teams, and outside agencies. While some responsibilities stay consistent, the work is always evolving.
A Supportive Culture And Room To Grow
What she loves most about Bancroft is its culture of acceptance and teamwork. Staff across programs collaborate to meet the needs of each individual. Bancroft also encourages continued growth through trainings, CEUs, conferences, and professional development opportunities.
One moment that has stayed with Misty is watching a young child she once supported—who initially struggled with intense behaviors and could not attend school—walk independently across the stage at graduation.
Misty’s message to anyone considering a social work career at Bancroft is simple:
