Motivation and Joy: A Nurse’s Journey at Bancroft
For Dana Kelly, nursing felt like a natural fit right from the start. “I always knew I wasn’t meant for a desk job. I can’t sit still,” she shares. With encouragement from her parents, who wanted her to have a stable and rewarding career after graduation, nursing became the perfect blend of purpose, practicality, and passion.
Dana’s professional journey began in 1987 at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and continued at Cooper Medical Center, where she gained valuable clinical experience. Ready to stretch her skills and try something new, she joined the Bancroft nursing team in 2006. While she had limited experience in behavioral health at the time, Bancroft offered what Dana was looking for: a place to learn and grow.
Daily Inspiration
What Dana loves most about her role is, without hesitation, the students. “I truly love the kids,” she says. Working with them has been both humbling and inspiring. Through their unique perspectives, she has learned to appreciate life’s simplest joys and to celebrate every milestone, no matter how big or small. Each day brings its own special experiences, moments that continue to motivate and inspire her year after year. “I have learned more from the students than they have from me!” shares Dana.
As a school nurse, she is a familiar and trusted presence, providing physical assessments, medical care, and guidance for additional follow-up when needed. The relationships Dana has built with students are at the heart of her work. “They know us, they trust us, and that trust makes all the difference,” she explains.
A Culture of Growth
Bancroft has played an important role in Dana’s professional growth, offering ongoing training and opportunities to attend external conferences that align with her interests. She speaks warmly of the culture at Bancroft, guided by a shared belief that “it takes a village.”
And her favorite part of the day? Simply being there. Seeing everyone each day is a reminder that connection, teamwork, and community are at the heart of everything she does at Bancroft.
