A Path To Teaching
From an early age, teaching was always somewhere in the back of Jillian Caputo’s mind — even when the path there wasn’t always clear. While initially drawn to the Health Sciences, Jillian graduated from college in 2020 knowing she wanted to work with individuals with diverse needs, but wasn’t sure exactly how. During the uncertainty of the pandemic, she decided to take a chance and apply for a Direct Support Professional position at Bancroft. That decision quickly proved to be life-changing.
Earlier shadowing experiences at Bancroft NeuroHealth and connections she made with staff helped open the door for Jillian, who began as a paraprofessional at the Welsh Campus. From there, she earned a Substitute Certification while working toward full teaching credentials. What makes teaching at Bancroft especially meaningful to her is the variety and impact of each day. While no two days are the same, the heart of the work is always the same: making a positive difference in students’ lives.
One moment that really stands out for Jillian was getting to present a student with the Brinser Award—an honor recognizing kindness, hard work, and personal growth. It stands out as one of many unforgettable experiences over five years at Bancroft.
Collaboration To Make An Impact
With Bancroft’s support, Jillian has earned multiple certifications and a Master’s degree in Special Education. Surrounded by a dedicated team and a collaborative culture, she continues to find joy in watching students learn something new each day. “My favorite part of my day at Bancroft always includes when I get to experience a student learning something new. It can be a physical skill or independent communication; it does not matter, it is all my favorite,” she says.
