Being a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is about the quality in one’s own personal life and the lives of others. What we do in this life and our choices, define who we are as a person, our character. I chose to help others to be the best they can be. It takes a very special person to do what DSP’s and other caregivers do – the calm, the control, the patience, the empathy and the heart – a lot of heart. To have those special smiles and tiny happy moments after a very long shift, make it all worthwhile.
Being a DSP means every day – the good, the bad and those ugly days – is something different, something new. On a daily basis we are changing the lives of these beautiful individuals for the better.
Being a DSP is not just a title. It’s so much more.
- It’s about a student working overnight to pay tuition.
- It’s about a person helping to support their family back home.
- It’s people taking care of each other, making sure we are okay.
- It’s about a single parent, who left their kids with a babysitter to help cover a shift.
I have been a Bancroft staff member for a little over a year. I started as a Direct Support Professional and have since been promoted to Senior DSP. There is growth potential at Bancroft, if desired. There is tuition reimbursement for those who wish to pursue education goals. Being a DSP is about selflessness and sacrifice for a greater good. Making new memories daily, working together as a team to change lives, and trusting each other to care for other individuals with a variety of diagnoses.
To all my fellow Direct Support Professionals here at Bancroft and around the world, to me and you, you are celebrated, appreciated, loved, cared for and thanked. Thank you for all that you do on a daily basis in Changing the Lives of the individuals we serve.
