As an organization that hires approximately 1,000 employees a year, we know firsthand the value of a great first impression.
There are many facets to deciding whether someone will make a positive contribution to our organization. Here are some simple tips that can help you better prepare for a successful interview and job placement.
1. Prepare Ahead of Time
Many candidates arrive for an interview and are not informed about who we are and what we do. Make sure to:
- Review the company’s web site for overall information on what they do, who their clients are or what their product is, and information about their leadership.
- Write down any questions you might have in advance.
- Mentioning that you’ve done your research during your interview and commenting on what you found interesting will definitely score you extra points!
2. Dress For Success
Your dress should be a reflection of your personal style, but also be business-appropriate. Take the time to plan your interview outfit in advance from head to toe.
Here are some examples of interview-appropriate attire:
- Slacks, khakis or dress pants
- Button up shirts, polo shirts, sweaters and blazers
- Blouses, knee-length skirts and dresses
- Dress shoes/heels, closed-toe flats
Avoid wearing these:
- Sneakers, flip flops
- Tshirts, shorts, athletic attire

3. Arrive on time
- Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to any interview.
- Map your interview location on Google Maps or your GPS in advance and plan accordingly to allow extra time for traffic.
- Save the contact phone number for the office location in your phone in case you need to call for directions.
4. Bring Copies of Your Resume
- Print 1-2 copies of your resume or work papers.
- If you have not yet developed a resume, be sure to write down your work experience, projects you are proud to be part of, and what makes you a bright candidate for the position you are applying to.
- Earn extra points by providing a written letter of recommendation from one of your former employers or mentors.

5. Be attentive and friendly
- From phone conversations to greeting the front desk receptionist, make sure everyone you encounter is treated with respect.
- Introduce yourself with a smile and handshake to everyone you meet.
- Make sure you thank each person you interview with and let them know you appreciate the opportunity to speak with them and look forward to hearing from them on next steps.
- Avoid checking your phone during the interview – be present.
We look for great candidates that really shine through the interview process by being themselves and showing us they value our time and commitment to our care. Preparing ahead of time helps reduce stress – which in turn helps you be yourself during your interview.
