From Senior Caregiver to DSP: Meet Sonia Alvarez

DSPs are at the heart of what we do. To celebrate Direct Support Professional week, we wanted to spotlight some of our great employees! Meet Sonia Alvarez who has been at Bancroft for 3 years. She currently works at the Burlington Day Program- read her interview below!

Here’s what her colleagues have to say:

“Sonia advocates for the people she supports and has stepped up to become the senior program associate in a program she had to learn, a role she took on like a champ. She’s amazing to work with, and always willing to help out wherever she is needed.”

Q: What inspired you to become a DSP?

I worked in senior care for 10 years. I wanted a change but I still wanted to help others.

Q: Describe the impact you make on the lives of the individuals and families you’ve met.

I love to make it my duty to advocate for them even when they believe it’s something small.

Q: What lessons have you learned throughout your career?

I’ve learned that not everyone knows how to express themselves the same way and that is okay.

Q: What is the biggest advice you have for new DSP’s?

My advice is to come with an open mind.
