Finding the Perfect Fit at Bancroft: Terrence’s Story

Finding the job that’s your “perfect” fit can be a challenge.

Terrence Jenkins applied for a position at Bancroft in August 2016, at the urging of a friend. As he approaches his five-year anniversary with the organization, his journey through the organization has included multiple promotions — and plenty of personal and professional growth, he says.

Today, Terrence is a Program Manager in the children’s community residential program in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey — and his story shows how the “perfect” fit can show up when and where you least expect it.

Q. Can you talk about the career growth you’ve experienced at Bancroft?

A. I started as a Program Associate in a group home. Shortly after, I was promoted to another group home as a Senior Program Associate. A few years later, I finally applied to be a manager. After 8 months in the interim position, I was officially promoted. Each year in this job has increased my understanding of neuroscience and individuals on the autism spectrum.

Q. How did you get started at Bancroft?

A. A friend of mine had been working with the organization for a little over a year. He said I would be a perfect fit and should apply, too. I did — and the rest, as they say, is history.

Q. What made you want to pursue a career in human services?

A. I’ve always been classified as a people person. Interacting and communicating with people has always been a strength and a joy. Helping the individuals we serve has just become an extension of that skill.

Q. How does your job at Bancroft impact your life?

A. It has impacted my life in a very positive way. Since I was hired, there has been a noticeable change in how I converse with my friends and family. I’ve gotten stronger with my organizational and time management skills.

“Being able to experience different perspectives has given me a greater appreciation for true diversity.”

Q. What does your job mean to you?

A. Knowing I get to come to work to make a difference in someone else’s life and actually watch someone progress and master personal goals has been an unexpected delight. I care about the staff who dedicate their time and energy to help the individuals we serve grow and become more active members of society. It’s been such a ride and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
